I got to experience a “once-in-a-lifetime” event last week in Nashville, Tennessee. The Total Eclipse which went from Oregon to South Carolina, occurred here from approximately at noon until 3 p.m. on Aug. 21, 2017. But at 1:28 p.m. and for the next two minutes — we experienced what everyone referred to as “totality.” The picture of our city, below, at 1:28 in the afternoon, with street lights coming on and very little happening — no work getting done and everyone literally standing around in wonder and amazement — got me thinking.
It got me thinking about how this actually happens every day — in huge supply chain enterprises everywhere.
Folks are working “in the dark” having no indication of how they are performing with unanswered questions flooding their minds.
Are they even working on the right task? Should they be doing something differently? Think about it. Even you as a Supply Chain Executive or Manager are constantly wishing you had more information at your fingertips — answering the question: exactly, how are we doing right now? It’s easy to look back and say, “Oh, I see we had a good day three days ago, and yesterday wasn’t too bad — though we missed our goal by a bit. The more difficult question is, “How are we doing at 1:28 p.m. and what can we do between now and 5 or 6 p.m. to make our goals for the day?”
It is mid-afternoon, and I am “in the dark” almost like the total eclipse. However, there are software tools available that are beginning to be used by more and more supply chain leaders, to give everyone a view of what’s happening now — and where should our focus be for the next few hours.
We had to view this total eclipse through “special glasses” that allowed us to focus on the right thing, and filter out all the “bad stuff” that could have caused serious problems. But there are no such special glasses for your supply chain to help you navigate the “darkness.”
